Upstage, Downstage, Backstage, Offstage

4/2/2025

Who knew there were so many stages in theater? March has been SETTING THE STAGE or paving the way for the next few months! First Friday Friends has secured some speakers from alpaca farms to cowboy mounted shooting, to Nancy Drew books! Plus, the details are now all worked out for our first Southwest Iowa Regional Theater Spotlight with 3 communities, Shenandoah, Greenfield, and Corning’s traveling thespians performing 6 short 10-minute comedy plays on April 12 in Corning. And we’ve rescheduled the show from Christmas, so The Finesse will be performing April 19 and featuring songs from Motown!  And we’ve added a country concert by Chris Moreno on May 2.

Magic of Lighting

6/1/2024

From an early age of watching westerns with my father, I knew instantly when the bad guy entered because of the music. The same is true for stage lighting. The last several years I have learned that stage lighting is an art form, that influences & impacts the experience. For a production such as Madagascar Jr. the lighting design, & planning takes many hours to implement. At every rehearsal, I sit with a script in hand, jotting down notes. Such as when the director tells a child where to stand for a solo, I write that in my script – soloist down stage right. Other times I determine the mood of the scene, such as a dream scene versus the villains. I compiled a list of all these notes. From there I determine how many lights repeat, for example there are 7 scenes, so we need seven black outs.

As Corning Opera House community theater actors prepare for a production of Dearly Departed on April 28 & 29, I thought this would be a great time to explain the Top 10 Theater Terms.
  1. House has different meanings. One is the location, either the auditorium or the box office. Then there’s “house seats”, for special guests or Front of House manager, problem solver.
