These small towns built around the time of the height of a coal industry supplemented the needs of the countless farmers & still others were established for very different reasons. Many existed for a few years, some slowly faded away over time, & a few never existed except as “paper” towns. Regardless, each community has its own unique story. Towns are truly windows to our past & have helped form the history of our state. Discovering & learning about them helps to keep their names & memories from oblivion. Take a tour around Iowa exploring a sampling of these idiosyncratic communities in photographs & stories from Brooklyn, Boyer, Cooper, Dalkeith, Grant City, Muddy & more.

Josiah Bushnell Grinnell & the Iowa Underground Railroad
Josiah was called "preacher", "congressman", "negro-stealer" during his life. He participated in the Iowa Underground Railroad, helping at least 37 fugitive slaves. David will tell a story of racism, noble actions and conflict, highlighting abolitionist John Brown's visit to Grinnell and Grinnell's first riot over the presence of fugitive slaves in public school. |
