How do choose performers?

De’s Dazzles – How do we choose our performers/entertainment?
A popular question I am asked is How do I choose which performers to have? There are many facets to this question.
  1. Our Board of Directors desires the Corning Opera House to be a family friendly place, so parents know it is a safe place to bring the family! We encourage generations to attend events together. Grandparents bring your grandchildren and introduce them to music you liked or Adults spending time with their parents.

Developing in the dark room

People are fascinated to learn under the original Corning Opera House stage were two dressing rooms, one for female and one for males. In the center of the stage was a trap door that led to either room. When the Adams County Free Press purchased the building in 1935, the dressing rooms were painted entirely black and became the Darkroom.

Lessons from the apple

9/7/2022

As I was making applesauce this year with my father I was once again reminded of the lessons I’ve learned from apples! An apple grows at the end of the limb and hangs on by a stem.

At a recent concert, someone asked me what time do I get to the building for a 7 pm show? 6 pm? UH, nope, far from it!
For a typical concert with a band of 3 to 6 members, the band will arrive mid-afternoon. The more people in the band, the longer it takes, so the earlier they arrive. So, for this example we will say there are 5 people and they are arriving at 3 pm. Upon arrival at the opera house, the team lead will take a general tour with our tech Andrew or myself. ....

Planting a Garden

  1. Decide what you’d like to plant. I learned early on if you won’t eat a vegetable, don’t grow it in your garden! The same holds true for a director choosing a musical/play, direct what you like!
  2. Choose a location.  My garden was too far away, so I neglected to weed & water it! A garden needs a perfect location: easy access for picking, watering, & caring for your plants. The same is true of a musical, the director picks a place that is easily accessible & provides the necessary items (sound equipment, costumes, props, lights, set) to nurture growing young actors.

Potholes...

Life is like a road – it has bumps, cracks, potholes, construction, and obstacles, but in the end, it gets you to somewhere! The pandemic years seemed like we were stuck on the dirt road in the mud!

Big Dream

The 1896 Corning fire destroyed the bank that was located at 800 Davis Avenue. The limestone basement walls stood as a reminder of what was, until 1900 when FC Reese stepped in with a Big Dream to purchase it. After finding investors for $50 a share, meeting with city council members, the current building was built in 1902 for $15,000. The Corning Opera House opened in September. The Gauthier family’s Big Dream opened the Adams County Free Press in this building in 1935. Next came the Dan Field family’s free press Big Dream about 1980. In 2000, the Corning Opera House non-profit had a Big Dream which culminated in the restoration in 2012.

Be Mine Valentine

Recently I was looking at some vintage Valentine’s Day Cards similar to the ones I remember receiving in elementary school. Our classes would spend an afternoon turning shoeboxes into beautiful master pieces of art for our personal mailboxes. It was so exciting to sneak your mail into your classmates mailboxes. Valentine’s Day afternoon P-A-R-T-Y-T-I-M-E!

During the California gold rush of 1849, people were hoping to strike it rich! They went into the mountains, started digging, hoping to find gold in ‘dem hills! Those without maps, studied the land and followed rivers, hoping. But if you had a plan, a process, a map, some ingenuity, discipline, and commitment you could reap the benefits of your labors
