What is load in & sound check?

At a recent concert, someone asked me what time do I get to the building for a 7 pm show? 6 pm? UH, nope, far from it!
For a typical concert with a band of 3 to 6 members, the band will arrive mid-afternoon. The more people in the band, the longer it takes, so the earlier they arrive. So, for this example we will say there are 5 people and they are arriving at 3 pm. Upon arrival at the opera house, the team lead will take a general tour with our tech Andrew or myself. ....

Planting a Garden

  1. Decide what you’d like to plant. I learned early on if you won’t eat a vegetable, don’t grow it in your garden! The same holds true for a director choosing a musical/play, direct what you like!
  2. Choose a location.  My garden was too far away, so I neglected to weed & water it! A garden needs a perfect location: easy access for picking, watering, & caring for your plants. The same is true of a musical, the director picks a place that is easily accessible & provides the necessary items (sound equipment, costumes, props, lights, set) to nurture growing young actors.

Life is like a road – it has bumps, cracks, potholes, construction, and obstacles, but in the end, it gets you to somewhere! The pandemic years seemed like we were stuck on the dirt road in the mud!

Big Dream

The 1896 Corning fire destroyed the bank that was located at 800 Davis Avenue. The limestone basement walls stood as a reminder of what was, until 1900 when FC Reese stepped in with a Big Dream to purchase it. After finding investors for $50 a share, meeting with city council members, the current building was built in 1902 for $15,000. The Corning Opera House opened in September. The Gauthier family’s Big Dream opened the Adams County Free Press in this building in 1935. Next came the Dan Field family’s free press Big Dream about 1980. In 2000, the Corning Opera House non-profit had a Big Dream which culminated in the restoration in 2012.

Be Mine Valentine

Recently I was looking at some vintage Valentine’s Day Cards similar to the ones I remember receiving in elementary school. Our classes would spend an afternoon turning shoeboxes into beautiful master pieces of art for our personal mailboxes. It was so exciting to sneak your mail into your classmates mailboxes. Valentine’s Day afternoon P-A-R-T-Y-T-I-M-E!

During the California gold rush of 1849, people were hoping to strike it rich! They went into the mountains, started digging, hoping to find gold in ‘dem hills! Those without maps, studied the land and followed rivers, hoping. But if you had a plan, a process, a map, some ingenuity, discipline, and commitment you could reap the benefits of your labors

Gratitude, Generosity, Gifts...

SURPRISE - I was taken by surprise when looking out the kitchen window and saw a Cooper’s Hawk near our birdfeeder. The weird part was our Siamese cat was sitting on the porch meowing to get in the house. The hawk was aware of the cat, but not disturbed by the situation! So as 2021 comes to an end, our Board of Directors are aware of the cancelled rentals and concerts, but .......

Life is like a box of chocolates

In the movie Forrest Gump, Forrest states that his momma once told him “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get!” As the pandemic unfolds, the opera house has encountered some good and not-so-good experiences, just like picking a chocolate. Will it be nutty, fruity, creamy, dark or milk chocolate? Forrest found himself in some unique situations with unexpected challenges – a lot like covid. That box of chocolates is a gift to be savored!

Missing Puzzle Pieces

10/5/2021

Growing up, I remember my grandmother hunched over the card table, spending hours piecing together the odd cut shapes into scenic pictures of America. Each piece added another slice of satisfaction, and each piece was vital to the whole picture. At the time, I thought we were putting puzzles together, but looking back, there was a whole lot more happening as we shared stories, struggles, triumphs and developed a strong bond.

Piecing the Puzzle Together, happens one story at a time.

LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE, THE WORLD NEEDS YOUR LIGHT

9/8/2021

Let your light shine. Be the Light. The sun always shines. Well somedays, the light is a very dim flicker, especially when more money goes out for unexpected breakdowns and monthly bills, than what comes in at the Corning Opera House. Then I think of all the different kinds of light. Such as striking a match in the depths of a pitch-black cave and that little light drove the tension right out of the area! Or walking on a cloudless night with a flashlight that illuminates the path just far enough to feel safe. Or the sunbeam that breaks through the storm clouds.
